Een januari-avond in het Haagse bos, Louis Apol
In the Rijksmuseum. I think the title translates roughly as “A January evening in the Hague forest”.
In addition to the muted colors and soft edged value transitions in which Apol achieves his almost tonalist atmosphere, I particularly love his textural application of paint.

Wow! What an unusual, but highly effective way to manipulate paint to achieve this effect!
That is the true feeling one gets on a january snowy day in our regions. If you want to feel the sunny side admire the scenes of Emile Claus, a painter of the Flanders
Thank you, Hilde — a wonderful suggestion. I touched on the work of Emile Claus a couple of years ago: http://linesandcolors.com/2013/11/17/emile-claus/
