  1. That’s really intriguing. Does all of Liotards work have that pale tonality?

    1. No. Many of his subjects were pale skinned members of the upper classes (an 18th century symbol of status, indicating one didn’t have to work out in the sun), but it was unusual for him to present them in a pale background.

  2. Pardon me, but this version says it’s Madame Mary Gunning, Countess of Coventry. I’m confused.

    1. Even though the title is in Dutch, I’m inclined to trust the Rijksmuseum over Wikipedia, though either could easily be an incorrect listing.

    I recognize the dress from another delightful Liotard portrait that I saw in the Uffizi in Florence, he seems to have used it on several models.
