Kneeling Woman with her Left Arm Raised, Raphael (Raffaello Santi), drawing in red chalk
Kneeling Woman with her Left Arm Raised, Raphael (Raffaello Santi)

On Google Art Project; also Wikimedia Commons. Original is in the National Galleries Scotland.

Red chalk with touches of black chalk. 11×7.5″ (28x19cm).

When I think of superb draftsmanship in the history of art, Raphael is way up there on the list. Way up there.

  1. Having just finished researching and writing an essay on Raphael, I found it neat to find his drawing art up on here. Compared to some of the other artists of his day, Raphael certainly developed his drawings to a high level of detail.

  2. Raphaello Sanzio da Urbino, Prince of Painters, decorated Villa Farnesina for the richest banker of Rome and Sienna, known as ‘il Magnifico’, who provided jobs for 20,000 people, Agostino Chigi.
One of the six chapels in the Basilica of S. Maria del Popolo was designed by Raphael.

On April 6, 1520, his 37th birthday, he died suddenly and unexpectedly of mysterious causes, so his unfinished Transfiguration painting was placed on his coffin stand.Sad.
