Alex Ruiz is a concept artist and illustrator working in the film television and video game industries.
Much of his character work is intentionally dark, but the pieces I find of most interest are his environments and imaginative experiments. In these, his digital paintings often have a fascinating character combining biomorphic, architectonic and mechanical forms, with perhaps a bit of Richard Powers’ free form sci-fi style thrown in to boot.
He makes use of repeated sub-forms and textural elements, dramatic value contrasts, and palettes with restrained gamuts, but intense areas of high chroma color.
Ruiz has an eBook collection of his work and several design tutorial videos available for sale from his blog.
