Matty Burnham, ink and watercolor illustrations

Matty Burnham is an English artist and illustrator working in ink and watercolor. His subjects are usually architectural, often of modest little cottages and houses.

He captures these with varied ink lines drawn with a fude fountain pen, which allows artists to vary the width and character of their line by turning the pen at various angles.

He renders these in washes of watercolor, often enlivened with a few key details and lively textures of granulating watercolor pigments. He simplifies his subjects, reducing them to their distilled essence in bold geometric shapes.

The result is strong compositions with the visual appeal of both drawings and paintings. They have the immedicy of a casual sketch, even though they appear to me to be carefully executed.

On Burnham’s website, you’s find examples of his work in his shop, with sections of both original art and prints.

You’ll also find digital downloads of the ink phase of a couple of drawings that you can paint along with, using his finished pieces as inspiration. There is a materials page for those interested in what he uses for his illustrations.

Burnham also offers workshops, both in person in the UK and online.
