Mark Boedges is one of my favorite contemporaty painters. I had the pleasure a few months ago to see him conduct a brief painting demo as part of the Wayne Art Center Plein Air event, for which he was the juror.
Though my fovorite subjects of his are his deep woods landscapes of rock filled streams (some of which you can see on his webisite here and here), I am very much enjoying his current focus on fishing boats.
In particular, I like the way he has carried his fascination with light in the landscape into the opportunities offered by scenes of fishing boats at night or dusk, with the boats and their rigging under the sharp glare of artificial lights.
You can see this in the work in his new solo show at The Red Piano Gallery in Bluffton, South Carolina, which opens tonight, Friday, November 6, 2026 from 5:00 – 7:00pm.
