Robert Steven Connett

Robert Steven Connett
Robert Steven Connett is a California artist who takes his current inspiration form biological forms — both flora and fauna, micro and macro, land and ocean dwelling — from which he generates new variations, as though he were painting with recombinant DNA.

His subjects can be deliberately disconcerting, tinged with a bit of Cronenberg-like bio-horror, or just peeking-into-another-world weirdly fascinating.

Occasionally, particularly as you go back in time, you can see the influence of artists like H.R Giger, Patrick Woodroffe and some of the pop surrealists, but in his recent work, Connett seems to be carving out his own ecological niche.

Connett works in acrylic, apparently in a method involving glazes, though I don’t know if he’s working from a monochromatic underpainting or just layering colors to adjust and deepen individual colors. His pages of bio and background information are a bit, um… organic, and I haven’t been inclined to wade through in detail.

You can find additional images in his selection of prints.
