Wonderfully fluid and economical handling of this table setting subject by Scottish painter Samuel Peploe. It carries a feeling of the still life work of Manet, who was likely an influence.

Thanks Charley. Not familiar with this artist. I added this painting to my Google Art Project collection.

Looking at his later works, he seemed to abandon the calligraphic brush work for a more flat, studied, cubist direction.

    1. Yes, and though I prefer his earlier work, I like some of his Cezanne-influenced later still life; particularly when it’s textural and painterly: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/full.php?ID=102946

There’s a pretty good overview on The Athenaeum if you haven’t come across it yet: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/list.php?s=yu&m=a&aid=3075
