A Natural Stone Arch Beside the Sea, Carlo Ferrario, pencil on paper, 6 x 12 in. ( 21 x31 cm). In the collection of the Morgan Library and Museum.
The link is to the Morgan Library page from which you can zoom or download the image. I recommend that, as my crops above are insufficient to give you the feeling of the complete drawing.
19th century Italian artist and set designer Carlo Ferrario gives us one of those marvelous pencil drawings that shows some of the potential of this most humble of mediums.
Look at the variety of marks, strokes, tones and textures he utilizes, and the wonderful sense of the texture of the stone and the atmospheric perspective of the scene he achieves with them.
Makes me want to put my paints away and get out my pencils!
