Carl Saltzmann, who was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was known for his seascapes and landscapes.
The images above are not of his original painting, but of a chromolithograph of that painting.
Chromolithographs were an early form of color printing, in which the use of multiple lithograhpy stones for different colors, combined with team labor, allowed for commercial color printing of images using a few colors or many. At their most expensive in terms of the number of stones and difficulty of preparation, they resembled modern process printing.
Magnified, you can see a difference in the kind of random looking distribution of colors on the surface (images above, bottom two). It’s a sharp contrast to the more ordered patterns of most modern printing.
