    Jim Wodark
Though I was familiar with the online portfolio of California based plein air painter Jim Wodark (pronounced “wood-ark”), and already had him on my list for a post, I had the opportunity recently to meet the artist and attend a demo he gave at the recent Wayne Plein Air Festival here in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Wodark was the juror for this year’s event and in addition to judging the event and conducting a workshop, he gave a free demo in which he painted a copy (images above, bottom) of one of his existing paintings (second from bottom) over the course of about two hours.

As he worked he discussed his process, and also talked about some of the artists, both historic and contemporary, who have influenced him, including Ken Auster and Richard Schmid.

Wodark has a crisp, vibrant style, in which he demonstrates a deft touch with both value contrasts and variation in edges. He also experiments with composition, at times pushing elements out of the typical “safe” areas of the canvas in which many artists work, leaving large areas of foreground, for example, in the manner of Degas or Caillebotte.

His subjects include rocky and mountainous western landscapes, as well as costal views and seascapes, urban subjects, scenes from his travels in Europe and occasionally still life or figurative works.

Wodark participates in a number of regional shows and plein air events around the country each year, garnering awards in his wake.

There is a podcast conversation with Wodark from 2011 on Artists Helping Artists (the interview starts about 5 minutes in).

Art Museum Day 2013, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Brandywine River Museum, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum of American Art, The Delaware Art Museum
Not to be confused with the more general Museum Day in September, which is sponsored by Smithsonian magazine (my post here), Art Museum Day is a relatively new event, started last year, that is sponsored by the Association of Art Museum Directors.

This Saturday, May 18, 2013, participating art museums in the U.S. Canada and Mexico will be offering free or reduced admission, special programs and other events in a bid to attract additional visitors.

The page on the AAMD site lists participating museums, with some indication of specific events, though you should probably check with your local museum in question for more specifics. There is also an AAMD press release about the event, with a more compact list of the museums, here.

The event is held in on the same day as International Museum Day, which features events at museums in Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceana and the Americas (look to links on the right of the IMD page for more information about museums and events in specific world regions).

  • Wayne Plein Air Festival 2013

Wayne Plein Air Festival 2013, Elise Phillips, Charlie Hunter, Lisa Mitchell
The Wayne Plein Air Festival, held here in Southeastern Pennsylvania each May, is now in its seventh year and has grown into an important regional plein air event.

The participating artists paint for three days at locations within 15 miles of the town, one day in nearby Philadelphia and one day in the town of Wayne proper, where it is easier for onlookers to watch them painting.

I got a chance to walk through the town on the last day of painting last week, and to speak with a number of the 30 participating artists, who come from up an down the Eastern seabord, and sometimes further. I hope to highlight several of them in the next week or two.

There is a gallery of work by some of the painters on the site of the Wayne Art Center, which hosts the event. Though not of paintings painted for this years event, they are representative of the artists’ work.

There is also a PDF copy of an article from Chester County Life and an article on NewsWorks with a gallery of work from last year’s event and a brief interview with local painter Michelle Byrne.

The exhibition of work from this year’s event will be on display at the Wayne Art Center until June 28, 2013.

My Tor.com post on the Fleischer Superman cartoons
I’ve written before on Lines and Colors about the beautiful and groundbreaking series of Superman cartoons created by Fleischer Studios that ran before feature films in the early 1940’s.

I’ve written a more extensive article for Tor.com that delves into their place in the onscreen history of the character. It was posted this morning and you can read it here.
