Merced River, Yosemite Valley, Albert Bierstadt.
When looking at Bierstadt’s large canvasses, I always see multiple smaller compositions within the whole. I’m also constantly delighted at how painterly Bierstadt’s works can be when viewed close up.

Indeed – definitely multiple compositions. Amazing work, I’m in awe of his landscapes. Truly inspiring – thanks for sharing.

awful day has the Hill looking for some perspective.
Bierstadt considered his “Emerald Pool” as the finest himself.
As he confided to a friend, “I never had so difficult a picture to paint, as this White Mountain subject the Emerald Pool.”

I prefer the originality of Friedrich’s style myself.

There is a special talent to being able to make one’s art look just as good from afar and it does from up close. The textures in this painting are wonderful too!
Thanks for posting this one, Charley.
