  • Dot Bunn

    Dot Bunn
Dot Bunn is a painter based in the Bucks County area of southeastern Pennsylvania — a region noted for the influence of both the Pennsylvania Impressionists and the more academic traditionalism of Thomas Eakins and his followers.

Bunn carries some characteristics of both schools in her landscape, still life and figurative work. Her vibrant, painterly technique is applied over a foundation of strong academic composition and draftsmanship.

Her fascination with both color and value contrasts are evident in her landscape compositions, which often incorporate alternating areas of light and shadow, contrasted at times with others in which the value range is more subdued.

She also incorporates landscape, and carefully controlled value arrangements, into her figurative work.

Her figure compositions have a Gilded Age sensibility, and frequently have a narrative undercurrent, with her models posed in costume.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Bunn at the launch event for a mural project she is beginning, in association with Philadelphia artist Patrick Connors, at Historic Strawberry Mansion in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.

She is fascinating to talk with, and is someone who gives a great deal of thought to color and different ways of approaching color theory.

Bunn shares her expertise with students in local classes and regional workshops.

  • Eric Fraser

    Eric Fraser
Eric Fraser was a 20th century British illustrator best known for his illustrations in Radio Times that spanned a run of over 40 years. Fraser also worked in many other venues, from book illustration to commercial art for advertising,

His work is the subject of a retrospective at the Chris Beetles Gallery in London, that runs from 17 April to 11 May, 2013.

The gallery has an extensive selection of his work online. Most of the images are linked to larger versions. You can also view a slideshow of selected works on the Guardian, and there is a Flickr group pool devoted to his work.

Faser’s explorations of style range from whimsical to boldly graphic, at times bringing to mind the wood engravings of Lynd Ward.

There is a collection of his work from 1998, Eric Fraser: Designer and Illustrator, likely out of print but available from booksellers through Amazon UK.

  • Rijksmuseum reopens

Rijksmuseum reopens, Rembrandt van Rijn, Pieter Claesz, Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch, Gabriël Metsu, Rembrandt van Rijn
One of the world’s great museums, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, reopened its doors today after 10 years of renovations.

The museum’s centerpiece, Rembrandt’s monumental work Officers and other civic guardsmen of District II of Amsterdam, under the command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq andLieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch, known as the ‘Night Watch’ (above, second down), remains in its original position; every other aspect of the museum and the presentation of its collection has been redesigned.

There is an article on the restoration on the Museum’s recently redone website (which I wrote about last September), along with a video and photos.

In addition there is a documentary on YouTube, a video of the opening celebration on NOS, an article and slideshow on CNN and a slideshow on Guardian, along with an article on the rethinking of the galleries, and a video of a flashmob recreation of “Night Watch” in a Dutch shopping center.

Those of us who can’t easily visit the renovated museum in person can enjoy highlights from the museum’s collection in high resolution on their website.

  • Eye Candy for Today: Bierstadt’s redwoods

Original is in the Berkshire Museum (no image).

Bierstadt dazzled east coast society with his large scale paintings of a largely untamed continent. Few natural wonders could match these magnificent giant plants.

  • Kate Baylay

    Kate Baylay
Though she is a recent graduate of the illustration program at the University of West England, Kate Barley’s style has a mature feel.

She takes inspiration in the work of great Golden Age illustrators like Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac and Harry Clarke, with a bit of Aubrey Beardsley and perhaps a touch of early 20th century New Yorker cartoonists thrown in for good measure.

When looking through her website portfolio, be aware that though clicking on the images themselves simply advances to the next image, there are text links to the left for viewing the larger versions, which I recommend to really appreciate her work.

There is also a quick sampler of larger images from The Olive Fairy Book on the cizgili masallar blog.

  • Paul Schulenburg

    Paul Schulenburg
Paul Schulenburg is a painter originally from New York State who now lives and works in Cape Cod.

In the galleries on his website you’ll find a variety of figurative subjects, with people working on the fishing docks and in casual situations, as well as studio figure work.

You will also find still life subjects along with townscapes and room interiors. In the latter subjects, Schulenburg often creates a Hopper-like feeling of contemplative stillness.

I particularly enjoy his room interiors, in which he deals with subtle effects of light and shadow while maintaining a vigorous painterly surface.
